5 Things to Know About Dolce & Gabbana's Metaverse Show

At the Dolce & Gabanna 2022-23 Fall/Winter fashion show, a virtual runway was combined with a real one. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have proven that they are embracing new technologies.

A Glorious World

The invitation to the Dolce & Gabbana fashion show was presented to the guests in a lacquered red box containing a hanger and stockings. When creating the collection, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were inspired by virtual reality, imagining a journey into the meta-universe. “This time we are doing the reverse and trying to turn the fantasy into reality. Normally we take something real and develop it as unreal, but in this case we imagine an avatar and try to make it real,” explains Gabbana.

Virtual Reality

Drawing on the visual language of video games, designers are broad-shouldered on this season's runways to exaggerate the exaggerations we associate only with virtual reality. Padded shoulders, which we often see in jackets, are becoming the rising trend of the season.

Playing with the filters of the Metaverse, they seductively weave what they call a fetish dream. Worn under or over bras, strappy belts, and stockings, sheer bodied clothing is layered. Towards the end of the collection, the increasing stripes turn into dresses and the attention on the designs begins to increase.

Metaverse Vitality

They evoke the meta-universe with their video game character puffer jackets, patent dresses with oversized giant sleeves, and pleated-padded crop tops and interlocking balloon-like skirts. "Exploring new territories and experimenting is always exciting and thought-provoking," says Gabbana. "The meta-universe is something that doesn't belong to our generation, but we've worked hard to discover more about it, to be able to talk to this new generation, and to demonstrate our knowledge."

Real-Life Crafting

The show emphasizes that there is no concept of Metaverse at the end of the day. Proving that centuries-old craftsmanship is real, yellow and red colors are the most striking looks in the designs in the collection.
